The Appling County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) has been awarded state funding through the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) and U. S. Department of Agriculture, (USDA) which resulted in thousands of dollars for ACSO use. These funds have been used in the purchase of new patrol cars, radar and lidar equipment, mobile computers for deputy vehicles, and reimbursement for traffic enforcement details.
The rules and regulations of these grants require the ACSO to host regularly scheduled, local educational events, like the Sheriff’s “Junior Patrol Summer Camp” and P.R.I.D.E. Program, as well as multi-agency, concentrated patrols, in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Public Safety. This includes the Georgia State Patrol and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division. The ACSO must also participate in GOHS annual campaigns such as “Click it or Ticket”, “100 Days of Summer Heat”, and “Operation Zero Tolerance”. These patrols are performed throughout the county. On July 21, 30, and 31, three of these concentrated patrols were hosted for a total of 217 traffic stops, 127 citations, nine DUI charges, two Felony drug charges, four misdemeanor drug charges, and 119 warnings.
Sheriff Melton would like to thank all the agencies and Appling County citizens involved in assisting with these events.
