WHAT: Southern Nuclear is hosting activities across the southeast the week of Oct. 17 in observance of Nuclear Science Week. The events will educate the public on the benefits of clean, safe, reliable and affordable nuclear energy and raise awareness of the contributions, innovations and opportunities in nuclear science. Most of the events will be conducted at the nuclear plants the company operates: Alabama Power’s Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant near Dothan, Ala., and Georgia Power’s Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant near Baxley, Ga., and Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant near Waynesboro, Ga.
WHEN:
Monday, Oct. 17:
-Plant Farley will host 100 students and teachers from Thomas County Middle School. Employees will give a presentation on nuclear energy, give the group a driving tour of the plant and talk about career opportunities.
-Plant Vogtle will host Georgia Southern University’s chapter of the Society of Mechanical Engineers and give them a site tour.
Tuesday, Oct. 18:
-Plant Farley will provide in-class presentations to approximately 120 students and teachers for Rehobeth Middle School’s 8th grade. Employees will give a presentation on nuclear energy and talk about career opportunities.
-Plant Vogtle will host Evans High School (Columbia County, Ga) for a site tour. There will also be a site tour given to a local home school group.
Wednesday, Oct. 19:
-Plant Farley will host 100 students and teachers from Thomas County Middle School. Employees will give a presentation on nuclear energy, give the group a driving tour of the plant and talk about career opportunities at the plant.
-Plant Hatch will host more than 100 students and teachers from Wheeler County Middle School. Employees will give a presentation on nuclear energy at the new Energy Education Center, give a tour of the maintenance training lab to learn about careers in these fields, take the group in the training simulator control room and give a driving tour of the site.
-Plant Vogtle will host Lakeside High School (Columbia County, Ga) for a site tour.
Thursday, Oct. 20:

Southern Nuclear’s Women in Nuclear Corporate Chapter in Birmingham, Ala., will visit 2nd graders at Oak Mountain Elementary School to introduce them to the exciting world of nuclear science through hands-on activities.
WHY: Nuclear Science Week is observed around the world each year during the third week of October. In consultation with nuclear industry partners, the Smithsonian affiliated National Museum of Nuclear Science & History in Albuquerque, N.M., launched Nuclear Science week in 2010.
