The Macon Vet Center is participating in a Veterans Career and Resource Fair hosted by the First African Missionary Baptist Church Community Resource Center on September 23.

The event will be from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and will take place at the First African Missionary Baptist Church Community Resource Center, located at 702 N. Railroad Avenue in Mt. Vernon. Veterans, their families, and other interested persons are invited to come out and receive information on Vet Center services. Staff will be available to discuss readjustment and transitional needs and to connect veterans to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and community resources.

The VA has established vet centers across the country to provide a broad range of counseling, outreach, and referral services to combat veterans and their families. Vet centers guide veterans and their families through many of the major adjustments in lifestyle that often occur after a veteran returns from combat. Services for a veteran may include individual and group counseling in areas such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), alcohol and drug assessment, and suicide prevention referrals. All services are free of cost and are strictly confidential.

Attendees can tour the Macon Vet Center’s Mobile Vet Center (MVC), a high-tech vehicle that allows VA to take outreach materials about available services and programs to remote areas and special events. The customized motorized vehicle, closely resembling an RV, is equipped with confidential counseling space and equipped with a state-of-the art communication system. Veterans can receive counseling for post-traumatic stress issues, military sexual trauma, marriage and family counseling, information, and much more. The MVC also serves as part of the VA emergency response program.

Veterans are encouraged to bring a copy of their Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, commonly called a DD-214, to assist in determining their eligibility for services.

Vet Center representative at the event Jerry Long can be reached at 478-477-3813.

For more information about the Macon Vet Center call 478-477-3813. The Macon Vet Center is located at 750 Riverside Drive, Macon.
