David Boreanaz is stepping into the role of a classic TV detective, signing on to headline a reboot of The Rockford Files for NBC. The series reimagines the beloved show that originally starred James Garner and aired from 1974 to 1980.

Boreanaz, 56, is known for long-running roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Bones, and SEAL Team, has a strong track record with television projects—each of his past pilots has been picked up to series. He wrote on Instagram, alongside a media report about his casting news: “Grateful. Thank you James, GiGi and NBC.”

The official log line reads, per Variety: “A contemporary update on the classic series of the same name. Newly paroled after doing time for a crime he didn’t commit, James Rockford returns to his life as a private investigator using his charm and wit to solve cases around Los Angeles. It doesn’t take long for his quest for legitimacy to land him squarely in the crosshairs of both local police and organized crime,” the log line continues.

Boreanaz celebrated the official pick-up of the series, posting a photo on Instagram with the caption: “Open for business…let’s go to work. #JG #GiGi.”  The photo showed a business card reading: “Jim Rockford, Private Investigator, Malibu, California.”

The pilot is being written by Mike Daniels, with Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly producing for Universal Television. While the story is set in Los Angeles, filming for the pilot will take place in Atlanta, with some additional shooting in California. A premiere date of The Rockford Files reboot has not yet been announced.
