A single vehicle wreck involving a Blue Dodge Dart shut down US 1 in Baxley for hours. Details are sketchy as the GBI are still piecing the information together. We can confirm that at 10:58 pm a call came into 911 dispatch about an accident at G&S Auto Sales on Main Street. A black male in his 20’s was pronounced dead at the scene with a wound to his head. Exactly how it happened is still a mystery that the GBI is investigating.
The driver ran off the road some 300 feet before coming to a stop in the G&S lot. There has been some speculation as to if he had been shot. The investigators could not confirm or deny this. When the car came to a stop, a live power line was lying across the vehicle preventing emergency personnel from rendering aid. GA Power was called out to turn the power off. Power was shut off from about the Pine Lodge Motel all the way to Hwy 15 intersection. That is all the information available as of 6:30 am. The GBI Crime scene Investigators have been and were still working the scene when we left. Police Chief Godfrey said he could not give an official statement until Monday. We have a lot of unanswered questions and will be following this story as it develops.
