The Appling County Sheriff’s Office has been enjoying the holidays, attending training, and protecting its citizens.  The ACSO provided traffic control for the Fall Fitness Run. Sergeant Joey Coleman and Corporal Brandon Carver attended Active Shooter Training.  Sheriff Melton, Chief Davis, and Lieutenant Scottie Tanner attended the Bicentennial Celebration wrap up meeting. Sheriff Melton and Public Affairs Officer Allison Flory attended the 2018 Legislative Luncheon.  Construction of the Detention Center addition continued with the pouring of the second half of the project.
Investigator Robert Eunice headed up the Double E Farm First Annual Toy Ride which helped make Christmas a little more shiny and bright for many local children.  The event is expected to continue and grow in years to come. Participants, workers, and financial supporters stepped up to make the event a huge success. A new event which came from the success of the Toy Ride was “Shop with the Sheriff”.  Two Children from each of the three (3) Appling County Primary Schools were chosen to Shop with Sheriff’s Deputies and have some special time with the Sheriff.
Deputy Christian Derbez and Deputy Daniel Williamson attended Tactical Rifle Training at Plant Hatch.  Sheriff Melton and Baxley Police Chief James Godfrey led the Christmas Parade with ACSO and BPD staff following the parade to its ending at Winter Wonder Land.  ACSO staff assisted with security at the event. Chief Financial Officer Gail Dixon and Administrative Assistant Sasha Jones attended Eagle Systems Training regarding Quartermaster Inventory.  Sheriff Melton was the guest speaker at the Retired Educators Association Meeting. Investigators Anthony Tillman and Mark Varnadore attended Interviews and Interrogations Training at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC).
The ACSO Law Enforcement Explorer Post participated in mock crime scene investigation sessions led by Sergeant Joey Coleman and Corporal Brandon Carver.  They also enjoyed their 2018 Christmas Party thanks to CFO Gail Dixon, Sergeant Joey Coleman, and Detention Officer Alexis Bell. Sergeant Coleman and Detention Officer Bell are the 2018 – 2019 Advisors for the Explorer Post.
Brandon Griffis, Pam Dupree, and Avery Prickett attended New Cadet Weapons Training conducted by Sheriff Melton.  Chief Investigator Jeff Evans, Investigator Robert Eunice, and Investigator Stacy Wilkerson participated in the Appling Primary School’s “Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader?”.  We are happy to announce our investigators won their session. Sheriff Melton is proud to announce our two(2) newest deputies who graduated from Basic Law Enforcement Training at the GPSTC, Austen Peacock and Severeo Padron.  Congratulations Deputies.

The Sheriff’s Office considered it an honor to provide 14 funeral escorts.  Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office initiated four (4) new criminal investigations and closed four (4).
The Appling County Detention Center provided protection for our citizens by safely housing an average of 72 inmates during the current period.  Jailers completed 49 new inmate intakes and processed 51 inmate releases, which includes inmates from other counties that request our assistance in housing their inmates.  The medical unit provided 196 medical checks for the weeks and food service served 3148 meals. We continue to provide one outside detail that maintains the grounds of most county facilities.
Our 911 Emergency Call Center Dispatchers received and dispatched 3,959 calls for service, of which 912 were emergency calls directly to 911.  These numbers do not include routine communications between dispatch and units nor does it include the normal calls for training and drills.
