According to Baxley Police Chief James Godfrey, on Friday, December 29th at approx. 8:44 pm, officers of the Baxley Police Department at the Appling County Sheriff’s Office responded to an armed robbery at the Southern Express located on N. Blvd. On arrival, the clerk told officers that a black male entered the store, while another black male held the side door propped open, and that both were wearing all black and had their faces covered. The clerk said that the one who came into the store brandished what appeared to be an automatic pistol at her and demanded that she give him all the money. The clerk said that she gave the robber the money and then both fled on foot, heading north.
A lookout was posted to other units and surrounding counties, along with the K-9 unit being called in to assist in tracking the robbers. Officers canvased the area, and in a short time, the K-9 unit arrived and did a perimeter sweep of the entire area of the store, failing to pick up on the scent of the robbers.
