It was an honor for Sheriff Mark Melton and the Appling County Sheriff’s Office to unveil the Memorial Plaque which recognizes local officers killed in the line of duty. Family and friends of fallen law enforcement officer, Deputy Charles Woodrow Simmons, End of Watch October 06, 1978, attended the ceremony. Sheriff Mark Melton, Chief Deputy Gene Davis, and other ACSO staff members participated in the ceremony. Pastor Rick Brown gave the invocation and prayer. The Jesup Police Department Honor Guard performed the Laying of the Wreath with Pastor Robbie Tomberlin playing Taps. Sheriff Melton spoke about Deputy Simmons and his time as an ACSO Deputy and presented the family with the American Flag. Kevin Simmons, grandson of Deputy Simmons, spoke on behalf of the Simmons family, sharing family memories from the children and grandchildren.
