Super Tuesday Results: Biden Wins Nine States, Sanders Takes Three

14 states and one U.S. territory headed to the polls Tuesday in races that will help choose the Democratic nominee to face President Donald Trump in the November general election.

Former Vice President Joe Biden made a strong showing in the South and key northern states, while Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders earned wins in his home state and the West on Super Tuesday. Former New York City Mike Bloomberg secured a win in the territory of American Somoa, which has six delegates.

Based on CNN and NBC News projections, Biden is expected to win Alabama, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Sanders secured a win in his home state of Vermont as well as Colorado and Utah. 

For Biden; Alabama holds 52 pledged delegates, Arkansas holds 31, Massachusetts has 91, Minnesota holds 75, North Carolina has 110, Oklahoma has 37, Tennessee has 64, Texas has 228 and Virginia carries 99.   For Sanders; Vermont carries 16 pledged delegates, Colorado holds 67, and Utah has 29 delegates.

California and Maine were still undecided early Wednesday, though Biden led in Maine and Sanders in California, a crucial state that carries 415 delegates.
