On Monday, July 10, 2017 the Appling County Board of Commissioners were notified of an algae concern on Lake Mayers. A water sample was sent to the University of Georgia lab for testing. Test results were received on Friday, July 14th and the water sample tested positive for Planktothrix and Microcystis.
Microcystis can produce toxins. Typically, these toxins would need to be ingested for a toxic reaction. Planktothrix can produce compounds that may result in skin irritation. Fertilizer and septic systems can contribute to the fertility of Lake Mayers. To reduce the expansion of the algae, we need to limit the amount of phosphorus that is running into the lake. Residents are being asked to use low phosphorus level fertilizers such as, 14-4-14 or 15-0-15. In addition, Appling County is treating the lake with an algicide that is approved and registered for use in lakes by the US EPA.
Due to the current situation, Lake Mayers will be closed until further notice. We will continue to monitor and treat the lake over the next few weeks. If you should have questions, please contact the county office at (912) 367-8100.
