Disney is negotiating with Carrie Fisher’s estate about continuing to use her for the franchise. They’ve come up with a couple of options to keep the character alive, and the main one they are fighting for is CGI.
They are trying to work out a way to use a digital Leia for future movies. They would use the same technology that resurrected Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin and a young Fisher for the most recent Star Wars film to hit theaters, Rogue One. Fisher had already wrapped filming the sequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but was supposed to have an even more substantial role in Episode IX, on which production has not yet started. The only other options left are either to recast another actor to replace Fisher, or to write out Leia from the Star Wars story altogether. Neither of which will be too pleasing for die-hard fans.

Sam thinks they should leave it alone. He says since she’s already filmed her parts for Star Wars: Episode VIII, it should end there and not try to recreate Fisher for Episode IX.
Only time will tell….
