Appling County School District looks forward to celebrating School Board Appreciation Week March 16 – 20, 2020 throughout Georgia. This event is proclaimed each year by Georgia School Boards Association and salutes the work of our local school boards. Superintendent Scarlett Copeland stated, “We all appreciate the contributions of our local boards of education and look forward to honoring them at our Regular Board Meeting on Monday, March 16, 2020. I consider it a privilege to work along beside all five of our Board Members to bring the best educational opportunities to our students in our district! Our Board of Education works extremely well together and this is a blessing for our students, staff, and our community. When the Board and Superintendent work well together, much can be accomplished for the greater good of all”.
We commend the men and women serving our school district and their years of service are:
Reid Lovett – Board Chair – 4 Years
Justin Orvin – Board Vice-Chair – 4 Years
Dr. Areatha Virgil – 4 years
Stewart Reeves – 6 Years
Dr. Lynn Overstreet – 2 Year
As constitutional officers of Georgia, school board members are responsible for setting educational policies, employing the superintendent to provide buildings and equipment, operate a transportation system and disbursing of school funds. As community leaders, school board members serve as advocates for the children in local public schools and must study, evaluate and decide what actions are in the best interest of those students.
The Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) sponsors the celebration. The mission of GSBA is to ensure excellence in the governance of local school systems by providing leadership, advocacy and services, and by representing the collective resolve of Georgia’s elected boards of education.
