BI-WEEKLY REPORT
It may be Fall, but Hurricane Michael kept the days hot and hopping at the Appling County Sheriff’s Office! Sheriff Mark Melton, Chief Deputy Gene Davis, 911 Director Henry Alderman, and Captain Kenny Wright attended numerous weather update meetings along with other community leaders regarding the progress and local plan for the hurricane. Sheriff Melton did find time to read to the Pre-K students at the Altamaha Elementary School. The Sheriff, Captain Wright, and other deputies provided security for the Appling County Bicentennial Color Run and the Sheriff enjoyed Surrency Day. Sheriff Melton attended the Sheriff’s Fall Training Conference sponsored by the Georgia Sheriff’s Association. Chief Investigator Jeff Evans spoke at the meeting of the Autism Advocates of Appling County. Sheriff Melton, Captain Wright, Captain Bell, and Retired Sheriff Benny Deloach attended the Bacon County Exchange Club Law Enforcement Appreciation Banquet. The ACSO recognized the National Firefighters Memorial Day by flying the flag at half-mast. Sheriff Melton had the “sweet” privilege of being a judge for the cake contest at Zion Church of God. Brad Waters of First Baptist Church was Chaplin for the period.
During the period of October 5 through October 18, the ACSO provided the following services:
Deputies and Investigators made 15 arrests, issued 140 warnings, wrote 60 citations, served 70 Criminal and 26 Civil papers for various courts, completed 77 incident reports, provided security for Grand Jury, Superior, State, and Juvenile Courts. Deputies performed seven (67) community business and residence courtesy checks. K-9 officers performed seven (7) drug searches. There were 21 vehicle crashes worked by deputies, with assists from the Georgia State Patrol. Deputies patrolled 14,384 miles for the period. The Sheriff’s Office considered it an honor to provide 11 funeral escorts. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office initiated 11 new criminal investigations and closed three (3).
The Appling County Detention Center provided protection for our citizens by safely housing an average of 86 inmates during the current period. Jailers completed 67 new inmate intakes and processed 72 inmate releases, which includes inmates from other counties that request our assistance in housing their inmates. The medical unit provided 135 medical checks for the weeks and food service served 3923 meals. We continue to provide one outside detail that maintains the grounds of most county facilities.
Our 911 Emergency Call Center Dispatchers received and dispatched 1672 calls for service, of which 548 were emergency calls directly to 911. These numbers do not include routine communications between dispatch and units nor does it include the normal calls for training and drills.
