Appling County Board of Education and the school system has been engaged in Safety and Security conversations for a long period of time. Safety and Security is one of our top priorities in the school system. Safety Drills are an important component of our safety measures and are executed several times a year in our school system. We appreciate our local EMA, GEMA, Sherriff’s Office, Police Department, and other City and County Officials who partner with us to execute and analyze our school drills.
In addition to our drills within our schools, we have been engaged in many conversations about other safety measures with our BOE. Our BOE was interested in hearing from the public on safety as well. From these discussions, the Superintendent appointed a Community Committee on Safety in order to seek input. This Committee consists of City Officials, County Officials, Local EMA, GEMA, Businesses, and Parents. Their first meeting was conducted this Tuesday, October 9, 2018, to begin the safety conversation and the second meeting was conducted on October 25, 2018, to further discuss safety topics. This information will be provided to all schools for review and seek their feedback as well. The Community Committee on Safety will continue to meet to finalize their thoughts and make suggestions to the Board for consideration and final decisions.
Also, the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council met on October 24, 2018, to discuss safety in the schools. This information will be shared with the school’s administration, Safety Committee, and BOE. Working together in our community for the safety and security of our students and staff is one of the Board of Education’s top priorities. We appreciate everyone’s involvement and input.
