According to Baxley Police Chief James Godfrey: On September 16th at approximately 11:20 am, officers from the Baxley Police Department, the Appling County Sheriff’s Office, The Georgia State Patrol, the EMS, and the EMA responded to Walmart in reference to a bomb threat.
On arrival, officers quickly assisted the manager and his staff in the evacuation procedures which included removal of all shoppers and staff members.
Once the business was evacuated and secured, officers had the 911 center contact the nearest bomb squad, which was out of Midville Ga, come and assist in a search of the business.
While officers awaited the arrival of the bomb squad, and were questioning witnesses and conducting on and off site investigations, they discovered the location and identities of the caller(s) who made the bomb threat. This lead officers to the Glennville area.
The parties involved were contacted by local law enforcement which resulted in them being brought to Baxley, where they met with officers who conducted formal questioning along with further investigative actions.
As as result of the investigation, two 13 yoa juveniles from the Glennville area were detained and charged with one count each of terrorist threats and acts, and since have been turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice pending further proceedings.
Chief Godfrey would like to thank all agencies and citizens that were involved in this incident for their assistance and cooperation.
Original post: The Walmart in Baxley was evacuated at approximately 11:30 am on September 16th. Eyewitnesses at the scene said that a bomb threat was made, but this has not been officially confirmed.
