WEEKLY REPORT
The past weeks have been busy weeks for the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.  The ACSO conducted its third concentrated patrol with support and assistance from the Georgia State Patrol.  Chief Investigator Jeff Evans organizes and oversees these events. This special patrol alone resulted in 110 Warnings, 66 Citations, and 11 Arrest.  It was a huge success. Sheriff Melton attended the Bicentennial Festival Planning Committee meeting to prepare for the security needs of the festival.  The ACSO had its Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) Audit. These audits are conducted with Lisa Theus, Terminal Agency Coordinator (TAC) for the ACSO and Gigi Cannon, TAC for the 911 Center.   Sheriff Melton spoke to the SOAR Program students regarding the new “Hands Free” Law with information on time, distance and how quickly an accident can happen. The ACSO and Amy Rediger of Community Connections provided and conducted the P.R.I.D.E. Class (Parents Reducing Incidents of Driver Error) for drivers under the age of 18 who have received a citation. Sheriff Melton held a Department Head Staff Meeting to ensure the ACSO is running smoothly and efficiently.  Items included: Updated mapping for the 911 Center has been completed. The Dispatch Center has been remodeled. Mid-term evaluations have been completed. The ACSO will have an information booth in the Bicentennial Celebration.  Vaccine shots for ACSO staff are being scheduled. Chief Davis and Gail Dixon, Chief Financial Officer, attended the County Department Head Meeting for the ACSO. The ACSO also held a Firearms Qualification Make Up opportunity at the gun range.  Sheriff Melton attended the construction meeting for the new detention center addition. Everything is on track at this time. Sheriff Melton announced the acceptance of resumes for eight (8) promotions at the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.  Allison Flory, Public Affairs Officer, attended Social Media Training Class given by the Small Business Administration and hosted by the Baxley-Appling County Chamber of Commerce.  Pastor Wayne Williamson of Friendship Congregational Church and Pastor Ashley Tyree, Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office Chaplin, were the ACSO Chaplins for the two weeks.
For the two (2) week period of August 17, 2018 through September 6, 2018, the Appling County Office (ACSO) provided the following services:
Deputies and Investigators made 14 arrests, issued 50 warnings, wrote 33 citations, served 46 Criminal and 46 Civil papers for various courts, completed 68 incident reports, provided security for State, Superior, and Juvenile Courts, and performed 18 sex offender verifications.  Deputies performed 71 community business and residence courtesy checks. K-9 officers performed 12 drug searches. There were 17 vehicle crashes worked by deputies, with assists from the Georgia State Patrol. Deputies patrolled 12,861 miles for the period. The Sheriff’s Office considered it an honor to provide nine (9) funeral escorts throughout the two (2) weeks.  Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office initiated 13 new criminal investigations and closed two (2).
The Appling County Detention Center provided protection for our citizens by safely housing an average of 91 inmates during the current period.  Jailers completed 49 new inmate intakes and processed 52 inmate releases, which includes inmates from other counties that request our assistance in housing their inmates.  The medical unit provided 145 medical checks for the weeks and food service served 4024 meals. We continue to provide one outside detail that maintains the grounds of most county facilities.
Our 911 Emergency Call Center Dispatchers received and dispatched 1570 calls for service, of which 419 were emergency calls directly to 911.  These numbers do not include routine communications between dispatch and units nor does it include the normal calls for training and drills.
