Summer is here with all it can bring and so are the activities at the ACSO this week! Sheriff Melton is proud to announce Ethan Edwards has completed the 11 weeks Basic Law Enforcement Training Course at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC). Ethan began working with the ACSO as a jailer in April, 2017 and has progressed to Deputy. Ethan is also a member of the Appling County Search and Rescue Team (ACSRT). We are all very proud of Ethan.
Sheriff Melton and Chief Investigator Jeff Evans attended the Investiture of David L. Lyons, U.S. Marshal of the Southern District of Georgia. Sheriff Melton as the speaker for the Appling County Ministerial Alliance breakfast. Deputy Keith Mack, Investigator Robert Eunice and Investigator Stacy Wilkerson attended the C.H.A.M.P.S. (Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety) Summer Conference in Valdosta. Husqvarna and Knight’s Chain Saw sponsored a chain saw safety class for the ACSO and the ACSRT.
Deputies attended an In-Service Training on Use of Force and a deputy specific staff meeting. Corporal Joey Coleman and K-9 Deputy Cash provided a program for the New Jersey Baptist Church on Wednesday and again for Plant Hatch on Thursday. The Law Enforcement Explorer Post 560 enjoyed having Sheriff Melton as their speaker. Sheriff Melton spoke on Situation Awareness with emphasis on how this applied to teens. David Harris, Children’s Pastor of the Baxley Church of God, was chaplain for the week.
The Sheriff would like to extend a special thank you to Pastor Michael McClintock and the congregation of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church. As a show of appreciation, the church donated gift cards for ACSO staff as well and new toys to be given to children as a comfort if they are brought to the ACSO.
For the week of June 22, 2018 through June 28, 2018, the Appling County Office (ACSO) provided the following services:
Deputies and Investigators made nine (9) arrests, issued 25 warnings, wrote 27 citations, served 26 Criminal and 19 Civil papers for various courts, completed 28 incident reports, verified 18 sex offender addresses and provided security for Superior, State and Juvenile Courts. K-9 officers performed nine (9) drug search. There were nine (9) vehicle crashes worked by deputies, with assists from the Georgia State Patrol. Deputies patrolled 5,697 miles for the period. The Sheriff’s Office considered it an honor to provide two (2) funeral escort throughout the week. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office initiated two (2) new criminal investigations and closed four (4).
The Appling County Detention Center provided protection for our citizens by safely housing an average of 85 inmates during the current period. Jailers completed 17 new inmate intakes and processed 25 inmate releases, which includes inmates from other counties that request our assistance in housing their inmates. The medical unit provided 48 medical checks for the weeks and food service served 1838 meals. We continue to provide one outside detail that maintains the grounds of most county facilities.
Our 911 Emergency Call Center Dispatchers received and dispatched 729 calls for service, of which 244 were emergency calls directly to 911. These numbers do not include routine communications between dispatch and units nor does it include the normal calls for training and drills.
