Issues include rural infrastructure, permitting reform and environmental regulations

ATLANTA – Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Commissioner Russell R. McMurry, P.E. participated in a listening session and roundtable discussion with President Donald J. Trump, U.S. DOT Secretary Elaine Chao and Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke on Friday, June 9 in Washington, D.C. as part of Infrastructure Week. Commissioner McMurry was one of a few DOT leaders from across the country invited to attend this event. The discussion revolved around environmental, regulatory and permitting reform, as well as streamlining and eliminating duplicative efforts to advance transportation infrastructure.

“I am honored to have had the opportunity to have a seat at the table during this important discussion to represent Georgia,” McMurry said. “It was enlightening to hear from other state DOT leaders who face similar issues in their states, and most importantly the emphasis President Trump and Secretary Chao have placed on rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure.”

“It is gratifying to know that the fine work of our Department of Transportation is recognized by the administration,” said Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. “I am extremely proud that Georgia was represented at this important roundtable and that we have the chance to contribute to bringing the nation’s important infrastructure projects to fruition more quickly and efficiently.”

In his remarks following the roundtable, President Trump stated his intentions to reduce the regulatory burdens placed on state and local governments and return control back to local officials. Additionally, the establishment of a new council aimed at helping project managers navigate the approval process was announced.

“Streamlining the permitting processes and reducing the regulatory burdens placed on state and local DOT’s would allow us to complete projects more efficiently while adding more value to the environment itself instead of spending time and money on processes,” said McMurry. “I look forward to the U.S. DOT’s efforts and providing Georgia DOT support.”

The roundtable discussion and listening session marked the end of National Infrastructure Week.
