The Appling County Sheriff’s Office will offer two basic handgun safety classes later this month! Classes will be conducted by Sheriff Mark Melton and Superintendent of the Department of Corrections, Linton Deloach, as well as other certified firearms instructors.
The classroom portion of the first class will be conducted Thursday, March 23, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Appling County Sheriff’s Office. Students should not bring any gun or ammunition to this portion of the training. The second part will be Saturday, March 25 from 8:00 am until noon at the Baxley Police Department Shooting Range. The second class will be conducted Thursday, March 30, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm, with the second portion of the training the following Saturday, April 1, from 8:00 am until noon. This class will be held at the same locations.
Any citizen who is not a felon who is 21+ (or 16-20 but accompanied by an adult) may attend.
We will provide handguns for the shooting portion of the training. However, if you have a handgun and want to bring it with you on day 2, you may do so, but with the following restrictions: Before putting the gun in your vehicle, make sure it is safe and unloaded. If you are not sure about the gun’s safety, leave it in a holster and we will check it at the range. Once you arrive at the range, leave the gun in your vehicle. An instructor will go with you to your car to retrieve the gun.
