Today, October 20, the Georgia State Patrol is having a routine training day at the Baxley Municipal Airport. The exact nature of the training and how many participants are involved is not publicly known.
The troopers are expected to be in and around Appling County all day.
UPDATE: The GSP has responded to our request for additional information. They had this to say, “The training is for our Mobile Field Force. These training sessions are held quarterly. The Mobile Field Force is a group that is deployed in the event there is a civil disturbance. For example, the force was deployed when the protests occurred in Atlanta earlier in the summer.”
This confirms initial reports that the increased GSP presence in Baxley is for training purposes only.
