The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council met on October 4, 2016 at the Fine Arts Center of ACHS.  Approximately 40 students representing grades 9 – 12 are participating this school year.  The overall purpose of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council is to provide input to the Superintendent of Schools on various topics pertinent to our system.
Previously, this group assisted Superintendent Dr. Copeland and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Dominy in creating the M & M group (Mentors & Mentees) which has served elementary students in grades 3-5 once a week.  This has been a great experience for these high school and elementary students.  They gave their first formal report on this endeavor to the Board of Education at the conclusion of last school year.  This will be the 2nd year of this program and the number of students serving has increased!  Dr. Copeland stated, “This has been a worthy pilot program for both high school and elementary school students.  It is teaching our high school students to give back to others and it is also teaching our young students others care about them and their success in school.  These are some of the most powerful messages we can send to our children and I am extremely excited about the 2nd year of this program!”
Currently, Dr. Copeland and Dr. Dominy met with the Student Advisory to seek input on the development of a new program surrounding Character Education.  Character Education is an important component of student’s lives before, during, and after school years.  These students will determine the most important Character Education traits they would like to see our system promote each month and then devise activities to support these characteristics.  This will be developed for grades PreK – 12.  Dr. Copeland reported, We are looking forward to all Character words these students develop for our system and it will be exciting to implement these words throughout each month and the year!  Character building is extremely important for all students and will assist in molding our students in a positive direction for school and life.”
