A proposal to ban public drinking on Tybee Island this month was shot down Wednesday at a special city council meeting.
The council had been considering the open container ban to address the recent increase in spring breakers and the violence at last year’s Orange Crush beach event.
City leaders agree something needs to be done to make Orange Crush safer, but the question of “how” is a tough one to answer. The big concern with a few council members was that this particular decision was being rushed.
“We’re a week and half out from Orange Crush, and if we don’t have our plans in place by now, shame on us,” said Tybee Island Councilwoman Wanda Doyle.
That sentiment was echoed by several council members Wednesday who felt the proposal to ban public drinking in April was too little too late.
