An Alma woman recovers in the Augusta Burn Center after what police call a bizarre abduction and assault.
Early Sunday morning, Alma Police responded to a call involving a lady who was found nude and bound by a bicycle tire inner tube and duct tape.
Officers quickly discovered the lady had been severely burned with an iron and beaten with several other items. GBI and APD are further investigating the possibility of rape.
They’ve charged 59-year-old Ivery Williams with false imprisonment, aggravated battery as well as weapon and drug charges. They say he held the 24-year-old woman captive in his apartment and burned her with an iron.
“He left his home, which is where both of them were. She managed to get free and ran two blocks or so to a home and started knocking on the door. The family there called 911,” said Alma Police Chief Michael Leslie.
The crime shocks many in Alma.
“That’s something you’d hear about in Los Angeles or someplace like that. Not here,” said Jenise O’Neal, Alma.
Police say Williams and the victim admit they’re connected through illegal drug use. They say sometime Saturday night, Williams snapped. He attacked the victim, took her clothes, beat her burned her with an iron after using a bicycle tire hose to tie her up.
“In some fashion, it was tied around her head and then to her arm behind her so if she moved her arms, it would pull back on her head and she couldn’t breathe,” said Chief Leslie.
Police say Williams left the home and the woman managed to break free and run for help. Chief Leslie says Williams’s criminal record goes back to the 1980’s. The gruesome details have O’Neal and others stunned.
“I would have never thought him to do something like this, especially torture,” said O’Neal.
Williams remains in the Bacon County jail.
