Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council Meets
The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council met on Tuesday, February 16, 2014 at ACHS. During this meeting Dr. Copeland and Dr. Dominy reviewed the Mentor and Mentee (M & M) Program that was created by the Superintendent’s Advisory group at the end of last school year. Students worked diligently to name the program, create criteria to operate, and devise brochures to advertise the M & M Program. Superintendent Copeland and Dr. Dominy collaborated with Principals, Dr. Gene Starr and Debra Crosby to coordinate meeting dates for these high school students with elementary school students.
At this particular meeting held on February 16th, students were asked to utilize Circle Maps to describe what the M & M Program represents and to share this with new members of the Student Advisory Council. Students brought out several points that indicated the program is valuable and going extremely well. This is certainly a way for high school students to reach out to younger aged students as a positive, role model and supporter for them. According to Principal, Debra Crosby, she substantiated the program has been great for her elementary students! The Council also thanks Dr. Starr for allowing high school students to participate in this wonderful program. We look forward to continuing to grow this program and are proud we can provide these services free through our own students.
The remainder of the meeting was utilized to continue to cover the funding issue we could potentially be experiencing in education. Students were allowed to ask questions and provide their thoughts and suggestions on the matter. Superintendent Copeland also reported to students she had met with Representative Chad Nimmer and Representative Greg Morris regarding these issues. Appling County School System is pleased Governor Deal has now announced he is allowing a one year study of the possible new funding formula and will be forming a teacher committee to assist in reviewing.
Overall, the Student Advisory Meeting went very well and approximately 35 students were in attendance. Superintendent Copeland and Dr. Dominy look forward to the next appointed time with this wonderful group of students who have valuable input to offer!
